FAQs
Common Questions About Osteopathic Manipulation Treatment
Still have questions?
-
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is hands-on care provided by a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Using gentle techniques—like stretching, pressure, resistance, and guided movement—OMT aims to improve mobility, decrease pain, and support how the body functions as a whole.
-
OMT is commonly used to support people with:
Neck, back, and shoulder pain
Muscle tightness, spasms, and limited range of motion
Headaches (often tension-related or musculoskeletal contributors)
Rib and chest wall discomfort
Hip, knee, or joint strain (movement-related pain)
Posture or overuse issues (desk work, athletics, lifting)
Recovery support after minor injuries (sprains/strains)
OMT can also be helpful when pain is influenced by stress, sleep, breathing mechanics, or overall movement patterns.
Note: OMT is not a substitute for emergency care or evaluation of serious symptoms (like chest pain, severe weakness, numbness, or sudden neurologic changes).
-
They’re not the same, though both can be hands-on.
OMT is performed by a D.O. physician and includes a broad toolkit of techniques—often gentle and individualized—and is integrated with medical evaluation and primary care.
Chiropractic care is provided by a chiropractor (D.C.) and often focuses primarily on spinal adjustments.
Some techniques overlap, but training, philosophy, and clinical approach differ.
-
OMT works by addressing areas where the body is not moving well—often due to tension, imbalance, irritation, or compensation patterns. Improving motion and reducing strain can help:
Decrease pain signals from irritated tissues
Improve joint and muscle function
Support circulation and lymphatic flow
Improve breathing mechanics and posture-related load
Most visits include a medical assessment, hands-on treatment, and a plan for what to do at home (movement, hydration, ergonomics, or exercises when appropriate).
-
OMT is performed by a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) who has specific training in osteopathic manipulative techniques in addition to full medical training. Meet our team to learn more about our providers who offer this treatment.
-
Insurance: Coverage varies by plan. If you’re using insurance, OMT is often billed similarly to an office visit (sometimes with an additional procedure code). Some plans cover it; others apply deductible/coinsurance.
HSA/FSA: OMT is typically considered an eligible medical expense when it’s part of medical care, but every plan is different. Many patients successfully use HSA/FSA cards for physician visits and treatments—check your administrator’s rules.
-
Many people notice some immediate change (less tightness, improved range of motion, reduced pain), while others feel best improvement over a few visits as the body “holds” new movement patterns.
It’s also common to feel:
Mild soreness for 24–48 hours (like after a workout)
Fatigue or a “looser” feeling
Gradual improvement in function and mobility
We’ll talk about realistic goals for your specific situation, and we’ll reassess progress each visit.
-
Yes—OMT often works best as part of a broader plan, such as:
Strengthening or physical therapy–style exercises
Posture/ergonomic changes
Activity modification or training adjustments
Sleep, stress, and recovery support
Medications, imaging, or referrals when appropriate
We can coordinate care with PT, massage therapy, sports medicine, orthopedics, and other specialists as needed.
-
If you want more than “a quick fix,” we can build a longer-term plan that includes:
Prevention-focused visits (mobility + flare-up prevention)
Coaching on movement, training, and ergonomics
Monitoring related issues (sleep, stress, headaches, inflammation, chronic pain drivers)
A clear roadmap for what to do at home between visits
This is especially helpful for people with recurring pain, demanding jobs, athletes, or anyone wanting consistent support.
