New Beginnings in Osteopathic Care: A Spring Reflection from Direct Osteopathic Primary Care in Denver
Each March, I have the opportunity to reconnect with fellow physicians at the Annual Convocation of the American Academy of Osteopathy. This isn’t just a medical conference—it’s a gathering of those dedicated to the traditional, hands-on art of osteopathic medicine.
And it always brings me back to something simple, yet powerful: new beginnings.
A Rare and Meaningful Practice
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a deeply hands-on, patient-centered approach to care. Yet today, it’s estimated that only about 10% of Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.s) continue to practice this traditional form of medicine.
That makes this community—our community—small, but incredibly meaningful.
At Convocation, you’ll find physicians from every corner of medicine:
Clinics practicing OMT daily
Emergency medicine physicians
Pain specialists
OB/GYNs
Family medicine providers, like myself
And alongside them, the next generation—students eager to learn, observe, and carry this work forward.
I remember being one of those students, following Viola Frymann in her 90s, absorbing every bit of wisdom I could. Today, I continue to learn from mentors like Mitch Hiserote—a reminder that this work is always evolving, always being passed down.
The Power of New Beginnings in Health
This year’s Convocation brought a message that resonated deeply.
A lecturer, Dr. Hankinson, reminded us:
We regenerate our liver regularly
Our cerebrospinal fluid refreshes multiple times a day
Our GI lining renews every couple of weeks
Our lungs are constantly rebuilding
The body is always changing. Always adapting. Always working toward health.
That idea is at the core of osteopathic medicine—and at the core of what we believe at Direct Osteopathic Primary Care.
Even when health feels distant—buried under stress, illness, or injury—it is still there. The body is always working to return to balance.

More to Come in 2026
This year, we’re expanding how we support our patients and community, including:
New programs focused on whole-person health
Expanded patient education and resources
Community events and conversations around preventive care
Because just like the body, a practice should continue to grow, adapt, and improve.
Why Osteopathic Care Matters in Today’s Healthcare Landscape
In a fast-paced, transactional healthcare system, many patients are looking for something different:
More time with their doctor
A deeper understanding of their health
Root-cause approaches instead of symptom management
Hands-on care that supports the body’s natural healing
That’s exactly what osteopathic medicine—and direct primary care—offers.
At Direct Osteopathic Primary Care, we focus on:
Whole-person care (mind, body, and lifestyle)
Hands-on osteopathic treatment (OMT)
Preventive and proactive health strategies
Long-term relationships with our patients
This is healthcare designed to help you not just get by—but truly thrive.
Finding Health Again—And Again
One of the most powerful reminders from Convocation is this:
Health is not a fixed state.
It’s something we return to—again and again.
Even after illness.
Even after setbacks.
Even after long seasons of feeling off balance.
Your body is always working toward healing. Sometimes, it just needs the right support.
Moving Forward This Spring
As we step into spring here in Denver, I’m reminded how often new beginnings are happening—both within us and around us.
At Direct Osteopathic Primary Care, we are honored to walk alongside our patients in those moments:
When you’re starting fresh
When you’re rebuilding your health
When you’re ready to feel like yourself again
May this season carry you forward in your health—and remind you that renewal is always possible.
